      Thanks for the site. Some of the used bikes look like they are in my price range.
      Do you know any clubs or groups for mountain biking?

        I wouldnt buy a older used mountain bike, unless you are going to use it for off-road. Most alloy mtn bikes have a 2-year warrantee on the frame thus because thats the shelf life of one that regularly gets used. If you are to find a used bike, make sure its not over 2 years old. After 2 years of bumps, crashes, drops and such the stress factor on the frame starts showing, unless the bike was primarily used off road, sunday fun rides at the beach, on bike paths, etc.

          BTW---a used mtn bike or any bike thats not deemed a classic is worth only 30%-40% (or less depending on the age, condition) of what the owner paid for originally. This is a scale all resellers of cars, boats, bikeshops, electronics, etc use. However that is the standard of what they BUY them for, obviously they sell them for 60-70% of what it was originally worth. That said, unless you are buying from a retailer of used bikes, your standard of buying from a private party should be between 45-55% of what the item was originally.

          Here is an example. This frame costs about $2000 after taxes and shipping. I've had it for almost 2 years, its only worth $800 if I can even get that much for it on ebay. I think after all the parts I spent like around $3500 total, I would be lucky if I can get $1200 for the complete bike. If it were cleaned up and sold at someplace like Helen's, it would be about $1900.
          Its just like buying a computer, car, motorbike, etc---once you walk out the showroom floor, it de-values quickly.

            Thanks for the info. I bought a bike yesterday $390 it's a Trek 4500. I just started mountain biking so I didn't want to spend to much money. How did you post that picture? I was going to put up a picture of my bike but I couldn't figure it out

              You have to have your picture uploaded to the web somewhere. Yahoo!photos or Flikr..something like that. Once you upload it, you can do this:

              type the following:

              <<-- " p_i_x: (web address for pic here...without the parentheses)" -->>

              Make sure the above has no dashes, underscores or parentheses and you should be ok..had to add them so you could actually see the code...

              Try that.. :)

          I can't believe I missed this. Great advice buddy. I guess we should all just throw away our bikes after a couple of years, eh? So you caution this person about 2+ year-old bikes unless they are using it for off-road? Isn't off-road where you want something more reliable? Here's some real advice on buying a bike whatever advice Diamondback gives you, do the opposite. One look at his stable of bikes and "thus because" you'll know what I mean.

              What FatCat is saying: If you plan to ride off road, buy a used one, not a new one.

              "After 2 years of bumps, crashes, drops and such the stress factor on the frame starts showing, unless the bike was primarily used off road, sunday fun rides at the beach, on bike paths, etc."

              What FatCat is saying: If the bike was primarly used off road, the stress factor on the frame will not show and it is ok to buy a used one.
              But don't take tips from me, I don't post pics.

      Good suggestion by DS! You might also try Craigslist.org It's free to sellers, so you're likely to see a good number of bikes here.
